Parents sue Ohio school over bullied son's suicide

MENTOR, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio couple has filed a lawsuit saying school officials failed to stop bullying that they claim led to their 17-year-old son's suicide.

The suit was filed in federal court last week, almost two years to the day when Eric Mohat shot himself in the head. Parents William and Janis Mohat say their son was taunted and harassed by classmates at Mentor High School for months before his death on March 27, 2007.

Their lawsuit accuses the school district about 25 miles northeast of Cleveland of violating the high school junior's civil right to safety.

The teen's father says they would drop the suit if the school system adopted tougher regulations on bullying.

Without commenting on the litigation, school officials say the district takes bullying seriously.

Those parents are absolutely justified in bringing a lawsuit against that school system.
I can only hope that 1.) the school administration had put it's bullying policies in black and white - it's usually incorporated in the annual student handbook, and 2.) that the parents were able to have a well-documented case showing systemic bullying (notifying administration, teachers, etc.)
And frankly, if the majority of the bullying was done by a few identifiable individuals, lawsuits should be filed against them, also. This sort of thing has got to end - our kids cannot learn in an atmosphere of fear and harassment. The days of "kids will be kids" is long gone! :geek:

I agree that the school should be held liable 100%!
I ABSOLUTELY do not tolerate bullying of any kind! :cussing: It is awful, and the school should be ASHAMED of themselves by not doing something about that crap! This is one pet peeve of mine that I don't fuck around with! :hopmad:

I was bullied unmercilessly (sp?) in middle school by 4 horrible boys. For the 3 years that I went to that school, I lived in HELL...my parents were at the school constantly trying to get the asshole administrators to DO something about it all.....they (the admins) would "talk" to the boys and their parents and it would stop for a while, and then start all over again....
Shit, this brings back some really sad memories for me.
Needless to say, I abhor the word Nazi and I hope that those 4 assholes got what they deserved one day...I may have to talk about this in the bitch section that Moon gave us... :cussing:

Just WOW. I went to that school for a year in the 80's. The bully situation there doesn't surprise me in the least. Anywhere, for that matter. My kid was bullied so bad and I could get no help from anyone at all. I pulled her ass out finally and moved us all across the country.

ABSOLUTELY!! :jumpers:
Kids won't stop bullying until their parents and administrators realize it's not "boys just being boys" or mean girls picking on the unpopular girls. Whatever the reasons they suck and so do the kids that bully. The bullies that tormented him should be punished by having to work with handicapped kids for an entire summer camp session. It's a punishment that might teach them something.

OF COURSE I"D FUCKING SUE!!! :cussing:

I also blame the parents of the bullies.
There's usually a reason that a kids is a bully. :fencing:
